2014 Epona Stakes Betting Preview and Tips

March 28th, 2014

The 2014 Group 3 Epona Stakes (1900m) will feature just 14 runners at Rosehill Gardens this weekend after leading chance Angel Of Mercy was scratched from the final field on Thursday evening.

Currently amidst a lengthy preparation which spans back to the Group 3 Aboriginal Toy Show Quality (1300m) on August 24th, Scorpio Queen is currently leading betting markets for success in the 2014 Epona Stakes at a quote of $4.50, ahead of market mover Lucky Lago ($4.80), Epingle and Diamond Drille; sharing the third line of betting at $7.50 odds.

Will Scorpio Queen justify her favouritism in the 2014 Epona Stakes, or will one of her classy opponents get the job done on Saturday?

Mahara ($8.50)

Yet to finish outside the places in five starts this preparation, Mahara was arguably the biggest winner of all leading contenders at Wednesday’s Epona Stakes barrier draw, allocated the ideal gate 5. Unlucky to finish second behind Diamond Drille in the Group 3 Aspiration Quality (1600m) last time out, trainer Guy Walter is confident the talented Hussonet mare can go one better this weekend after working well at Warwick Farm earlier this week, and with in-form jockey Brenton Avdulla on board.

Diamond Drille ($7.50)

Steadily building to the task this time in, Gai Waterhouse-trained mare Diamond Drille settled well within the pack rounding the final bend of the Aspiration Quality two weeks ago, but displayed a strong turn of foot to easily overcome her rivals and secure a maiden victory at Group level. Despite drawing the wide barrier 15 for the Epona Stakes this weekend, Waterhouse is confident in another strong performance from the Al Maher mare this weekend ahead of a hopeful tilt at the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1500m) in April.

Danesiri ($17)

Hitting consistent form over her last two starts, Wayne Wilkes-trained Danesiri represents excellent value to punters at a quote of $17. Unlucky to finish second to Mishani Warrior in the Listed Tattersall’s Members Cup (1600m), Danesiri produced a strong turn of foot to finish third in the Aspiration last time out. Having drawn the ideal barrier 6, Danesiri’s claims on the 2014 Epona Stakes took a huge leap this week when in-form jockey Jason Collett was confirmed to take the ride.
